| Welcome
This
whole part of the Italian Riviera is incomparably charming.
In a large and deep gulf which opens before us we make
out Santa Margherita and then Rapallo, Chiavari. And
farther away Sestri Levante.
Aftering veering, our yacht glides near the cliffs and
suddenly, past the promontory that we have just rounded,
we catch sigth of a bidden and almost undiscoverable
bay thick village, Portofino stretches like a crescent
round this peaceful basin.....
(Guy de Maupassant)
Sestri
Levante: it is a very special place because it is divided
by a narrow strip of land rich in vegetation and has
two seas one quiet, romantic sea of the Bay of Silence
( "Baia del Silenzio" ) and one the lively,
animated sea of the Bay of Fables ( "Baia delle
Favole") named so by Hans C. Andersen taken by
its beauty.
Sestri Levante has remained faithful to its marine village
origins but has also been able to promote summer tourism
with swimming, shopping and art.
The Rizzi picture-gallery minds the secrets of Tiepolo,
Raffaello and Rubens.
Here the thin seduction of the Mediterranean is the
result of the fusion of two elements: rich and complex
history and simple and radiant nature.
This is why the climate and atmosphere of Sestri Levante
are so special.
Why don't take advantage of a day to visit further beauties?
Genoa, the "Superba", is only a stone's throw
away.
A seatown, a town of art, with its acquarium and "Palazzo
Ducale".
As you are at it, don't miss the atmosphere of the "Cinqueterre"
( the five lands), with their fishing villages resembling
ships fit out to sail.
If You would rather remain in Tigullio, then there is
Chiavari: choose the second week-end of every month
when a busy antique market comes to town.
If you enjoy the mountains you should spend a day in
Val d'Aveto, a stone's throw from the sea, or admire
the splendid panoramas on horseback or on foot through
the upper trails of the Ligurian mountains.
If you are fond of walking, there are more paths to
follow on the Portofino promontory and on the "black
gold" route which leads to the slate quarries in
Val Fontanabuona.
